Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is caused by the Borrelia species and is tick-transmitted.
For Lyme disease diagnosis, our laboratory offers:
- Serology
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
- Culture
1
Serology
For the serology, the serum is examined using three tests for the presence of specific antibodies. Our laboratory uses the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as the primary screening assay and the immunoblot as a secondary or confirmatory assay.
2
PCR
PCR is used to directly identify Borrelia species DNA.
3
CULTURE
Our cultures attempt to isolate the causative organisms which can tale up to six weeks.
